We are two fun-loving, art-loving, architecture-loving, but also nightlife inclined single young-minded spontaneous extroverted 50-year old girlfriends. Not the Birkenstock, backpacking, not-shaving, functional travelers. We are used to Europe, but more the Mediterranean countries. We are professionals, but obviously, with the dollar what it is, we can’t expect to be doing all we’d like. We are thinking of going late September. We are not sure where to compromise, hotel, food, shopping, museums, tours, what-you-may-suggest… We know we want to avoid American brands, Marriott’s, pizza huts, Starbucks.
Thank you all for your anwers. I think I need to qualify some about my background here. First, I do like art, but in five days, 3 large museums will be plenty. So, unless there is nothing else to do in Amsterdam, hopefully there is, I will stik to the scheduled tours. Second, I typically shop at the avant-garde places in NYC, London, and, of course, Paris, and Rome. I also am used to the quality of food there. Is the birtplace of austerity Christinaity going to compete sensually? Finally, the red light district scares me not one bit. I am all for prostitutution, chaotic nightlife, and all for every type of sexual orientation and pleasure. Although, I do want to stay at a classy hotel, with modern amerinities, just not an American one. As for speaking English, I know enough to know that the Dutch speak fluent English, and only Americans are cursed with not even manage to communicate with their hands and faces. I speak five languages. Maybe offer info with the biking?
